Today I was thinking about how I have been craving very specific, spicy foods with this pregnancy. When I was pregnant with Toby I think I craved chips and salsa for the first trimester, and then the cravings stopped. This time around, my craving for spice hasn't waned. Not only that but but one week I can't get enough of one particular type of food, then next week I want nothing to do with it. Here are just a few I've made note of so far:
- When I was sick, I craved Doritos Salsa Verde chips for at least 3 weeks solid. And then I over did it one night and threw them up. To this day, just the seeing a bag of them at Wal-Mart makes me queasy.
- I had a good two weeks where I ate a turkey sandwich on a white deli roll for both lunch and dinner. I wanted nothing on it but loads of pepper jack cheese and a little mustard. Now it sounds gross.
- This one isn't spicy but I thought I would list it anyway: A bagel with LOTS and LOTS of cream cheese slathered on top. Ever had one from Gandolfo's? Mmmm...its heaven.
- You know those awesome blossom appetizers at restaurants (basically a deep fried onion)? I literally had to go out to eat last weekend just so I could have one of those with some of that yummy horseradish dipping sauce. That, along with a small salad, was my meal for the night.
- The latest ongoing craving is jalapeno rings from Del Taco. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. When I first had this craving, I ignored it because I thought it would upset my stomach or at least give me heartburn. I finally gave in one day when I was running errands near a Del Taco. I think I devoured them in less than 60 seconds and anxiously awaited some type of negative repercussion. But nothing! In fact I found myself wanting to go back for for round 2, but decided not to push my luck.
So there you have it. I'm not sure why spicy things seem to hit the spot so much for me. I am a bit of a spice junkie normally, but being pregnant seems to turn me into a spice maniac.
Have any of you had any crazy cravings during a pregnancy? I would love to hear them...especially the SPICY ones. :)

Hey Debbie- I dont think I have ever commented yet, but I do enjoy your blog, something familiar about your life....I guess the whole mom thing- we've had similar experiences. I liked spicy until one day when all I wanted was dirt. yep, dirt. It was all I could do not to lick my hands after gardening, or when it would rain...that smell... I started eating whole, unpeeled carrots, and I didn't wash them first...gross, I know, but they had a bit of dirt on them. Then I found out I was way low on Iron-duh. I was anemic the rest of the pregnancy, so I'm not sure if they are connected, but maybe get some dirt, I mean iron in there too:)
I wouldn't say I really get cravings for specific foods, but I have noticed that I have heartburn most of the time EXCEPT when I eat spicy food. You'd think that would bring it on, but nope!
When I was pregnant with Aly All I wanted was onions and peppers Craig and I would go out for fajitas and yep head eat the meat and I would eat the onions and peppers with a heavy helping of salsa.
I didn't have any cool cravings really. Only one week I wanted Arby's roastbeef sandwiches for like every meal, but I ended up only eating them for lunch everyday. I wanted fruit all the time, fruit always sounded good and ground beef was the worst!
I LOVED LOVED LOVED jalepeno poppers and wings. I was all about spicy food with Courtney. Applebees has boneless spicy wings. SOO good!!!
With one pregnancy I craved oranges....I couldn't get enough! Another was the LARGE bags of peanut M&M's. Yum!!!
That's such a funny thing to crave!
My first pregnancy I had very few cravings, but root beer floats were a pretty consistent one throughout. Oh, and sugar cereals.
For my second it was all about fatty and salty: hamburgers and fries. I was pretty good and limited myself to only a couple a month (that was back in the day when I allowed myself only one hamburger per year - I've become weaker since then).
Oh, and once during that one, I HAD to have a cherry pie at like 10pm. Louie went out to forage for one. It totally made me happy.
This last pregnancy I really don't remember. I was too insane emotionally to remember much about the physical stuff.
I always have a meat aversion during (and even after) my pregnancies. Unless it's in hamburger form...which doesn't make any sense at all, since that's the grossest meat of all. ???
I love the spicy craving, though. It totally cracks me up.
